Music for Holy Week and Easter

As is usual at this time of year, music plays an important part in our meditations and worship. The Crucifixion and Resurrection have inspired composers down the ages, and added immeasurably to our store of wonderful music, touching many hearts and souls in the process.

On Maundy Thursday 9th April 2009, for the evening Communion service at 6.30 p.m. the music includes movements from Mozart's 'Requiem' and the Renaissance and on Good Friday, the 12 .00- 3.00 service of meditation is underpinned by Faure's 'Requiem' in its entirety and Thomas Tallis' Litany. Easter Day at 10.00am returns to a jubilant mood with the 'Hallelujah chorus' from Handels 'Messiah' and 'Laudate Dominum' by Rizza . The weekend concludes with a cathedral style Easter Festival Choral Evensong at 6.30pm with a celebratory Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Sumsion and joyous anthems by Philip Ledger (formerly of Kings College) and Edward Bairstow of York Minster. Certainly a time to be joyful!
